Should National Anthems be Multi-lingual? Or simply lyric-less?

Posted by polblogeu on April 30, 2006

Recently, there is alot of dust being kicked up about a version of the US national anthem in Spanish. Alot of resistance to this idea.

I think each group ought to be able to translate the English lyrics into their native languages. But some fear a domino effect, what next? The Pledge of Allegiance?

We need to think of the controversy in terms of two conflciting values "minority vs. majority." Would accepting a minority anthem maximize the benefits for all? Would upholding the majority view maximize the benefits for all involved?

Another question is: must we share an indentical language in order to share the same values?

Principled Nuance

Posted by polblogeu on April 30, 2006

I know it's politically incorrect to resist the either/or (us/them) category when to comes to politics, but that's precisely what I want you to try to do when you write here.

So, what is 'principled nuance?' Sorry to disappoint, but it's not some new liberal-speak neologism. In fact, I find much of today's liberal rhetoric ideological and polarizing.

Principled nuance is an individual approach to discussion that acknowledges the internal grey areas in one's opinion without abandoning core committments.
