2 Years in the EU, Yawn

Posted by polblogeu on May 1, 2006

Poland has been a card carrying member of the EU-club for 2 years now.

Have things gotten better for the average Pan/Pani post-accession? It depends, Poland has since 2004 had a Presidential election, adding an additional layer on the perceptions of better/worse…

Today was May Day here, I saw lots of Polish flags, not many EU flags unfurled here…

Should National Anthems be Multi-lingual? Or simply lyric-less?

Posted by polblogeu on April 30, 2006

Recently, there is alot of dust being kicked up about a version of the US national anthem in Spanish. Alot of resistance to this idea.

I think each group ought to be able to translate the English lyrics into their native languages. But some fear a domino effect, what next? The Pledge of Allegiance?

We need to think of the controversy in terms of two conflciting values "minority vs. majority." Would accepting a minority anthem maximize the benefits for all? Would upholding the majority view maximize the benefits for all involved?

Another question is: must we share an indentical language in order to share the same values?
